Day 9 of #31daysofhorrror review.
The Story: It sounds like just another urban legend — a videotape filled with nightmarish images leads to a phone call foretelling the viewer’s death in exactly seven days. Newspaper reporter Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is skeptical of the story until four teenagers all die mysteriously exactly one week after watching just such a tape. Allowing her investigative curiosity to get the better of her, Rachel tracks down the video and watches it. Now she has just seven days to unravel the mystery. (Google.com)
Here is a film that stands out to me as a must watch this Halloween season. The Ring was originally released in 2002. Inspired by its Japanese Horror predecessor, Ringu, it spawned a wave of other JHorror crossovers. And like the curse everyone in the film is trying to avoid, the Ring spread into sequels, comics, and the re-emergence of the “String-haired girl” horror movie troupe.
This film had me on the edge of my seat. On the train ride home, someone’s cellphone rang, and I laughed. Then nervously thought to myself, “Seven Days.”
There’s so much that The Ring gets right, but most importantly, it’s the atmosphere it creates. The film’s color is so dark, blue and gray, it’s like it’s drowning. Noises and images scream at you for attention. As Rachel races against the clock before her seven days are up, the truth of the curse is revealed.
If you’ve never seen The Ring, it’s a must watch. If you have, re-watch it.
And while you’re here, take a look at my supernatural thriller, A Still Small Voice.
